What you will find in Bullion
This category holds precious-metal bars and bullion coins. Gold bars from refiners such as Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, C. Hafner and The Perth Mint sit alongside coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf, Britannia, Vienna Philharmonic, Australian Koala and American Gold Eagle. There are also copper rounds and bars, and a few titanium pieces. Weights run from fractions of a gram to 1 kg silver and 10 kg copper bars.
Reading a listing
- Weight: shown in grams, kilograms or troy ounces. One troy ounce is 31.1 g, heavier than an ordinary ounce (28.35 g).
- Metal and fineness: .999 means 99.9% pure and .9999 means 99.99%. Older gold coins such as Austrian ducats are .986.
- Refinery or mint: the maker named on the bar or coin.
- Condition: most coins are uncirculated; some are coloured by the mint, others by a third party after minting.
What to check before buying
Small gold bars are often sealed in the refiner's assay card with a certificate. If you may resell one day, keep the card closed, because an opened pack is harder to sell. Colouring or gilding added after minting is decorative and usually adds little to the metal value. Compare the price per gram with the day's spot price to see the premium you are paying: it is higher on small fractions and presentation sets than on 1 oz coins and larger bars.
Prices
Most pieces here are between EUR 650 and EUR 6,200 with large gold bars and kilo silver above that.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a troy ounce and an ordinary ounce?
A troy ounce, the standard unit for precious metals, weighs 31.1 grams. An ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce weighs about 28.35 grams, so a 1 oz silver coin measured in troy ounces contains roughly 10% more metal than the everyday ounce suggests. Always check whether weight is given in troy ounces, grams or kilograms.
What does .999 or .9999 fine mean on gold and silver?
Fineness is the share of pure metal in the piece. A .999 bar is 99.9% pure and a .9999 bar is 99.99% pure, the usual standard for modern investment gold from Swiss refiners and the Perth Mint. Older gold coins, such as Austrian ducats at .986, are slightly less pure, so check fineness together with weight to work out the pure metal content.
Should a small gold bar stay in its sealed card?
Small gold bars are usually supplied sealed in the refiner's assay card with a serial number and certificate. Keeping the card intact makes the bar easier to sell again, because the next buyer can match the number and see the bar has not been handled. Once opened, the bar keeps its metal content but can be harder to resell at a good price.
Does colouring add to a bullion coin's value?
A coin coloured by the mint is part of an official issue, and collectors may pay more for it. Colouring added later by a third party is decorative and generally adds little beyond the metal content. Listings say which applies under Condition: coloured by the mint, or coloured by a third party other than the mint.
