What is in Euro Coins
Every coin here was issued from 2002 onwards, and most are uncirculated. Monaco is the largest group, mainly proof 2 euro commemoratives such as Grace Kelly, Rainier III and Albert Ier, followed by Italy, the Vatican, France, Finland, Portugal and Slovakia. You will also find 5 and 10 euro silver coins, BU year sets, coincards, rolls of 25 and large groups of circulated 2 euro commemoratives from several countries.
Why some euro coins cost far more than face value
Monaco, the Vatican and San Marino are small states that issue few coins, and much of each year's mintage goes straight to collectors in presentation packs. Proof versions are struck in smaller numbers again. That scarcity, not the metal, sets the price.
Terms in the listings
- Proof: struck with polished dies, with a mirror background, usually in a case.
- BU: brilliant uncirculated, usually in a year set folder.
- Coincard: a single coin sealed in an illustrated card.
- Roll: a bank roll of identical coins, usually 25.
What to check
For proofs and small-state issues, the original case and certificate matter; a coin removed from its packaging sells for less. Check that the capsule is intact and the coin shows no spots or fingerprints. For groups of circulated coins, the listing gives the number of coins and the years covered.
Prices
Most items here are between EUR 460 and EUR 1,400.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Monaco 2 euro coins expensive?
Monaco issues very small numbers of commemorative 2 euro coins, typically in the low tens of thousands, and most go directly to collectors in proof cases. Few ever reach circulation. That low supply, set against strong demand from collectors across the euro area, keeps prices far above the coins' face value.
Can a commemorative 2 euro coin be spent?
Yes. All 2 euro commemoratives are legal tender throughout the euro area at face value, whichever country issued them. Collectors keep them for their design and scarcity, and proof or boxed examples are worth much more than two euros, so they are rarely spent in practice.
What is a BU year set?
A BU (brilliant uncirculated) year set contains one of each euro coin a country issued in a given year, usually from 1 cent to 2 euro, packed in a folder by the national mint. Sets from small states such as San Marino, Monaco and the Vatican are the most sought after because far fewer are made.
