What is in Modern Coins
Almost everything here was struck after 2000, and most coins are uncirculated. Niue, Australia, Canada, Cameroon and Mexico are the most common issuers, with Germany, China and the United Kingdom also represented. Many are themed collector issues: Lunar year coins, the Mexican Libertad and Day of the Dead designs, mythology and wildlife series, film and cartoon licences, and high-relief or antique-finish pieces. You will also find commemorative medals and small sets.
Reading a listing
- Weight: given in grams; 28.3 g and 56.7 g are common. Check whether a coin sold as 1 oz means a troy ounce (31.1 g); the gram weight and fineness tell you the actual silver content.
- Denomination: the face value, such as 2 or 5 Dollars. It is legal tender in name only; the value lies in the metal, design and mintage.
- Finish: proof (mirror background), BU, antique finish (deliberately toned), high relief, coloured or gilded.
What to check before buying
For collector coins the mintage, the original box and the certificate of authenticity (COA) matter a great deal; a coin without its packaging is usually worth less. Check whether the capsule, box and COA are included. Handle proof coins only by the edge, or leave them in the capsule, since fingerprints mark the mirror surface permanently.
Prices
Most coins here are between EUR 390 and EUR 900.
Frequently asked questions
Why are so many modern collector coins issued by Niue?
Niue, a small Pacific island state in free association with New Zealand, licenses private mints to strike legal-tender collector coins in its name. The coins carry a New Zealand dollar face value, but their worth comes from the silver or gold content, the design and the mintage, not from the denomination printed on them.
What does antique finish mean on a coin?
Antique finish is a deliberate toning applied at the mint to darken the background and highlight raised details, giving a new coin an aged look. It is often combined with high relief. Because it is part of the original issue, it should never be removed, cleaned or polished off.
Does the box and certificate matter for a collector coin?
Yes. For limited-edition modern coins, the original box and numbered certificate of authenticity are part of what collectors expect, and a coin without them usually sells for less. If you may resell a coin later, keep all its packaging together and in good condition.
